Emma’s ceramic pieces are all wheel-thrown stoneware, in a range of functional & decorative forms. She works with white clay as a canvas to layer coloured slips and
underglazes in a variety of stencilled, hand painted & sgraffito designs.
Emma also has an interest in raku firing and decoration, exploring the interplay between controlled line
patterns and the chaos of crackle and smoke that the process creates.
Emma takes inspiration from classic tattoo art iconography, influenced by both Western traditional and Japanese designs. By transposing images to the solid ceramic surface, she creates a contrast with the usual context of soft flesh that encourages the viewer to consider tattoos from another angle.
The Raku work is not water-tight or food-safe, but perfect for dried flowers. Her tattoo-inspred work is and safe to use in dishwasher & microwave, but handwashing is recommended.
