Douglas
& Jennie Phillips
Jennie
and Douglas Phillips make decorated, wood-fired stoneware. Douglas
became interested in pottery while at school and started to work
in a pottery at the age of 16. After completing the Harrow pottery
course and working for Michael Cardew and Gwen Hansen, he set up
his pottery in Devon in 1968. He moved production to Queen Camel
where he began wood-firing.
Jennie Phillips, a graduate of Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts,
after initially producing earthenware in Dorset, moved to Queen
Camel where she concentrated on decorating Douglasís pots
and was responsible for the general operation of the pottery. Now
she also throws as well as decorates and she also teaches pottery
classes.
Douglas is recognised as an authority on wood-firing and has lectured
widely on the process. He and Jennie have developed the successful
international summer pottery course at Queen Camel.
Their pots are made using their own mixture of Donyatt clay and
Dorset ball clays, which are once or twice fired to 1,300C in a
100cu.ft. kiln.
