Showcasing British, independent, professional potters and ceramic artists.
New Members
Pelin Hanley, a Bristol potter, has been making hand-built ceramics for more than 20 years and is a member of Clifton Arts Club. Texture and earthy, muted tones on eroded surfaces, natural objects, shells, stones, leaves, and bones inspire her to explore shape and texture. She makes one-off, hand-built ceramics by coiling, pinching, pressing or using slabs mainly from stoneware clays and finishes them with metal oxides.
Simon Melican, also of Bristol, produces a range of stoneware vessels that reflect his continuing fascination with texture, pattern and experimental glaze techniques. His black and white ‘sgraffito’ series is produced by engraving through matt black slip into the white stoneware body beneath. These designs, inspired variously by African drums and textiles, also have the quality of a stark linocut. Simon achieves more subtle hues on his ‘splatter’ ceramics by using various techniques to apply copper, chrome and manganese oxides and then glazes to his thrown vessels.
