Monumental Forms: Ceramic Sculpture by Mark Hilde
Jaunary 15 - March 30, 2009
It's really exciting to have these stark, monumental structures at Potters. Their impact is huge and Mark's workmanship is fantastic!
Artist's Statement
The influence of the coastal environment of West Wales, my childhood landscape, permeates the sculptural ceramics that I produce. The breathtaking scenery of the coastal and rural landscape inspires and motivates me in my work. A background in precision engineering (working for thirty years in the industry) has trained me to work with a meticulous eye for tight tolerances, refined lines and defined angles.
My interests in nature and contemporary architecture have been incorporated to create pieces that contain the essence of natural forms in shapes that have clarity of line and beauty in simplicity. The sense of movement in my pieces is informed by waves of sea or the motion caused by wind as it travels through foliage, bending boughs, creating fluidity of form.
After experimenting with many styles, I now favour and produce contemporary pieces with strong simple lines and angles - textured surface decoration with sophisticated colouring, and shapes that have a flow and architectural feel to them. I also find the interplay between light and shadow very interesting and will invariably try to incorporate a facet of this into my work. The natural light sources of the external environment add further dimensions of possibilities – more life through movement of the sun, clouds during the day, moonlight at night…
All my work is hand built using slabs of stoneware clay and I construct each piece individually without the aid of moulds. The modelling and carving of the finer detail ensures each piece is unique. Following bisque firing to 1000°C, I apply my own glazes and finally fire to 1250°C. |
| The
Shop
We have a large variety of high quality handmade ceramics
on display in our co-operative. We are a marketing co-operative
(est. 1996), with over forty independant professional potters
and ceramic artists. Because our members also serve as POTTERS'
staff, we can offer our pottery and ceramic sculpture at very
competitive prices, keeping operational costs down while providing
staff who know and appreciate what they sell.
|
We
frequently change displays and special exhibitions of a great
variety of types and styles of pottery and ceramic art: garden
pots and ornaments, water features, sculptures, clocks, mirrors,
wall decorations, lamps, vases, personal ornaments and ranges
of tableware.
We can arrange instalment purchases and wedding lists, provide
gift vouchers and also arrange for work to be made on commission.
We accept cheques and most debit and credit cards.
